Texas Border Plazas Get Cargo Upgrades
Expanded hours in its commercial vehicle operating hours at four southwest border ports combined with infrastructure improvements at two of the major crossings are now going to make it quicker for carriers to clear their loads.
Hub Hour Expansions:
- The six month test at the Yslsta port in El Paso and Loredo World Trade Bridge (starting 1-5-2009) will operate around the clock
- Otay Mesa adds an additional two hours and Nogales increases its service by two hours during peak agriculture season starting the first of the year.
To date the El Paso check point is realizing use of the extended hours but the Otay Mesa Crossing is showing little use of the extended operation hours. The the extended operating value will be reviewed for future decisions to keep the expanded hours or to release the expanded hour program.
- At the Lorado crossing will be increased to 15 inbound lanes with an additional seven new inspection booths.
- El Paso will replace its old inspection booths and increase the count to 8.
In conclusion this project is meant to increase the efficiency of importing and transport of goods ultimately decrease truck wait times to under an hour at the crossing points even during peak periods.
